Driving home the real value of a GPU - better performance per watt per dollar

Posted by Tony DeYoung on December 22, 2014

WCCFTech has an interesting article regarding the recent AMD FirePro price reductions for the W8100, W7100, W5100, W4100 and W2100.

He talks about the critical factor in GPU choice for any larger installation or for an HPC cluster: performance per watt per dollar - that is the sunk cost incurred at the time of creation and the running/operating cost, which in most cases is the electricity consumed.

From the article:
“If the size of the cluster is small and electricity costs in that area are not high then the builder will almost certainly focus on sunk cost. If the size of the cluster is huge and/or electricity costs are too high then the builder will tend to side with power efficiency. Of course if money is no issue or electricity is free, then the builder will focus on performance alone.” With the high performance and new pricing ... “AMD has both sides of the coin covered”

ESI Visual-Environment 10 CAE / CFD software tested and certified for AMD FirePro W series

Posted by Tony DeYoung on December 17, 2014

ESI Group is a leading ISV in engineering simulation and virtual prototyping for large automotive and aviation customers around the world. Uses include crash simulation, manufacturing process simulation, composites, and CFD.  AMD FirePro worked with ESI to accelerate graphics processing using the GPU and OpenGL (e.g. VBO). ESI has now released Visual-Environment 10. AMD FirePro W-series GPU and drivers have been tested and certified to deliver speed and robust performance with Visual-Environment 10.0.

Vincent Chaillou, COO, ESI Group said: “ESI Visual-Environment users demand the most robust and feature-rich graphical support to manage end-to-end virtual prototypes and large-scale engineering simulation models, as required for every day finite element analysis and for computational fluid dynamics.“ESI is pleased to continue its successful collaboration with AMD. Powered by AMD’s outstanding driver quality, AMD FirePro is certified for Visual-Environment 10.0 and offers exceptional benefits even for engineers using massive displays, while delivering an extremely powerful and stable working environment.”

OpenCL delivers simulation performance for Simulia Abaqus and Siemens NX Nastran using AMD FIrePro

Posted by Tony DeYoung on December 17, 2014

CADPlace describes how CAE applications vendors such as Dassault Systems and Siemens PLM Software have begun to partner with GPU vendors to take advantage of OpenCL and GPUs for solving large systems of non-linear equations.
The article describes three important aspects for optimizing engineering workflows:

1) Partnerships between graphics vendors and software vendors
2) Developer tools like OpenCL
3) Fast GPUs with the right features to support simulation applications like the AMD FirePro W8100 and FirePro W9100

The article links 2 PDF downloads about AMD FirePro and their CAE partners:

AMD FirePro GPUs powers the #1 and #2 ranked workstation laptops of 2014

Posted by Tony DeYoung on December 16, 2014

According to Notebook Check, AMD FirePro GPUs powers the current #1 and #2 ranked workstation laptops of 2014.
First place is the HP ZBook 15 G2 followed closely by the Dell Precision M2800.

CADPlace asks: When are the AMD FirePro W4100 and W8100 the right choices?

Posted by Tony DeYoung on December 15, 2014

CADPlace has posted two articles reviewing the mid-range AMD FirePro W4100 and high-end AMD FirePro W8100 in terms of price/performance and what they deliver for CAD users.

The AMD FirePro W4100 combines the benefits of an entry-level GPU and a mid-range GPU
The W4100 keeps the low-profile design and 2 GB of graphics memory of the entry-level W2100, but has a more powerful GPU and has four graphics outputs like the larger FirePro W5100 as well as application certifications.

For CADplace, the FirePro W4100 is an excellent choice for small form-factor workstations. For an SFF workstation it delivers good performance and allows for the best multi-display configuration options.

The AMD FirePro W8100 meets the needs of extremely demanding design environments.
The W8100 delivers 3D power needed for extremely large design assemblies. It has double precision computing performance and memory capacity for CAE workflows. It has the power to drive real-time design review applications and the driver is optimized for many professional CAD, rendering, and simulation applications.

For CADplace, the FirePro W8100 is an excellent choice for powerful, interactive 3D design and engineering workstations with workflows that span modeling, simulation, and real-time photorealistic rendering. And the ability to install up to 4 GPUs per workstation makes it a good choice for immersive VR systems, too
