Commenting on: OpenGL 3.0 - A Big Step in the Right Direction

OpenGL 3

There has been much controversy over the direction the Khronos Group/OpenGL ARB has chosen for the next major version of OpenGL. After testing an approach that would have a drastic effect on the API, requiring complete OpenGL application rewrites and not introducing any of the long awaited features modern GPUs are capable of, the choice was made to give programmers what they are really waiting for. And that’s new features now. GL 3.0 takes two important steps to moving open standard graphics forward in a major way. The first is to provide core…

Sorry Khronos Member, but everyone has already told you the problem, you just don't listen. those 2 ISV's have the nice advantage that nvidia and amd/ati test their drivers with their games so they don't have problems, while we indie developers are left in the dust with acceptable drivers from nvidia only. Oh and don't tell me they were happy either because Carmack didn't like it either so thats total bull. I'm just gonna say this, 1 last time, maybe this time you will hear, i'll keep it simple: OpenGL has problems, those problems were not adressed, lack of communication from khronos was the death blow. And legacy features WILL NOT and i don't care what you say EVER BE ELIMINATED, think Java, fact is if you failed with LP, you'll fail with deprecating stuff, if it was just about features you'd have removed every deprecated stuff and you didn't.
Hello to "someone who no longer cares". I think the things you said show that you do care. and you have all empathy from me. As one who was very harsh on the Khronos guys two posts behind, I must say that we have no choice but to put our faith in these guys, And hope that with LP 3.1 they will do something better (Though major changes require a new version , and 3.0 was just announced....) Although you (And also I) are not fond of what happened with the OpenGL 3.0 spec and both of us pointed the fact that the ARB boys have lost the passion for innovation and Have not added much stuff, let's not forget that this is the only FREE API and if only for that we must not give up on it. I , for instance, am about to post tons of comments in the OpenGL call for offers for the 3.1 and Intend to check out if the guys will listen. I would like to see OpenGL 3.1 rise from the ashes. So that the name phoenix would fit it best, and burn all competition with its rightful mind and innovations AS WAS BEFORE. Keep the faith , it is the only thing which keeps the Free world free. and remember , Free as in Freedom ! that is where OpenGL comes from !!! Wishful Thinking. The phoenix_wrath
Hello, my name is Rhys Paul Hovey,. an indie games programmer, maker of SYNTH video game, a math art game written in openGL 2.0,. PLEASE don't take away immediate mode,. or display lists,. these have very modern purposes, especially the display list,. it has a LOT of potential for the future,. to have hardware versions of HUGE nested command lists, where the object is encapsulated all the way down to a int is very important for many applications, and client draw arrays are vital for HUGE BUFFERS and dynamic geometry,. please don't kill OpenGL for Direct3D,. SO MANY new companies are using openGL,. openGL 2.0 is nice,. I think it should be frozen in time now,. please continue to support 2.0 with GLSL.
