Dassault Systèmes acquires Netvibes real-time social analytics

I almost missed this one because it was so far from what I was expecting.  Yesterday Dassault Systèmes (SolidWorks, CATIA, 3DVia, etc) acquired Netvibes, the RSS/Twitter/FacebookSocial Media dashboard service (corporate or personal).  This is part of their release of the 3D Experience platform intended to transform the way “innovators will innovate with consumers” by connecting designers, engineers, marketing managers and even consumers, in a new ‘social enterprise’.

Netvibes allows companies to connect internal enterprise platforms, databases or systems with external cloud apps, social feeds and live sentiment monitoring to create a real-time dashboard. This helps to track consumer sentiment, brand image or the adherence rate of early adopters, enabling companies to act in real-time and in-context for a better, richer experience and decision-making.

Interesting move for a 3D/PLM company!

This is a really interesting move by Dassault. They are differentiating themselves from their competitors very clearly here. This "thinking outside of the box" is what graphic card vendors like AMD could be doing. Find a way to get beyond the specs and feeds arms race. How will graphics companies like AMD, Nvidia and Intel compete in the professional markets. Reliability? Power Management? GPU-CPU integration? Open standards/open source? Or is it also moving into things that seem almost unrelated (but really aren't) like dashboards. Apple is the poster child example - they don't have the best/fastest etc hardware coming out first. They focus instead on user experience, battery life, and ecosystem - and of course great marketing that creates rapid fans. In any case, I think graphic card vendors need to move in that direction.
