AMD has posted a blog “Ready, Willing and Able - AMD Supports OpenGL 3.3 and OpenGL 4.0” announcing the new OpenGL 4.0 and OpenGL 3.3 beta drivers. The new beta driver fully enables the additional functionality introduced introduced in OpenGL 3.3 on all AMD ATI Radeon, ATI FirePro and ATI FireGL graphics accelerators - released since the spring of 2007. The Radeon HD 5400 Series to the Radeon HD 5900 Series, as well as the FirePro line are fully compatible with the OpenGL 4.0 standard, including tessellation and integration with the OpenCL API, enabling GPU acceleration in future OpenGL applications.

OpenGL 4.0 pulls the OpenGL open standard up to equivalency with the proprietary DirectX 11-level. Great to see ATI leading here. Any word on Fermi OpenGL 4 drivers? One of the big things to note in OpenGL 4 is it's closer ties to OpenGL. OpenCL will be the new battleground for open standards vs proprietary or closed systems like CUDA or DirectCompute.
AMD has a strong interest in the success of OpenCL because of their Fusion initiative - they will be able to use both CPU and GPU cores to accelerate applications. I am anxiously awaiting the next generation of OpenCL.
When will we see the new FirePro line that adds the hardware to take advantage of OpenGL 4?
