Enriched Reality Air Hockey using MultiTaction, Red Bull and AMD FirePro W7000

Posted by Tony DeYoung on June 24, 2014

At InfoComm 2014, MultiTaction was showing a 55”  Enriched Reality air hockey table driven by an AMD FirePro W7000. Touch was disabled and the only things that the game reacted to were air hockey paddles and Red Bull cans which acted as bumpers. Enriched Reality technology tracks the exact size of an object and can distinguish basic geometric shapes such as circles, rectangles or cans of Red Bull.

Check out the video to see it in action.

Building Power Efficient Compute Clusters with AMD FirePro S-Series at Int’l Supercomputing 2014

Posted by Tony DeYoung on June 24, 2014

At the International Supercomputing Conference 2014, Niles Burbank, AMD’s senior manager for server GPU products presented “Building Power Efficient Compute Clusters with AMD FirePro S-Series Graphics”. The presentation included information about how the advances in the software ecosystem, particularly those associated with OpenCL 1.2, make GPUs increasingly attractive for running HPC workloads in a scalable and efficient manner.

Niles discussed AMD’s upcoming additions to the FirePro S-Series family of server graphics cards, in conjunction with OpenCL, for the creation of powerful and efficient compute clusters offering multiple TFLOPS of single and double precision floating point performance to enable a supercomputer which would rank competitively in the Green 500. This session offered practical recommendations on deploying FirePro S-Series products in an HPC environment.

AMD FirePro W8100 combines 3D graphics with compute in one card

Posted by Tony DeYoung on June 23, 2014

AMD has unveiled the FirePro W8100 8GB GPU for high-end CAD/CAM/CAE.

image

The W8100 can compute a complex ray trace rendering or FEA simulation on one screen and still be fully responsive as you manipulate your 3D CAD model on the same display or across up to three other 4k display. The card is priced at $2,495. Full specs in the W8100 Datasheet PDF.

Along with the W9100, the W8100 will also be a part of AMD’s Ultra Workstation initiative.

Benchmarks in graphics and compute compared to the similarly priced Nvidia Quadro K5000 are below.
