Hands-On Introduction to OpenCL and OpenCL 2.0 and Beyond BOF at SC14

Posted by Tony DeYoung on November 06, 2014

In addition to the rich AMD FirePro theater schedule, there will also be several highly recommended talks at SC14 on OpenCL, presented by Simon-McIntosh-Smith from University of Bristol in the UK.

OpenCL: A Hands-On Introduction
DATE: Monday Nov 17
TIME: 8:30AM - 5:00PM
This is one of the most popular tutorials at the SC conference.  It introduces OpenCL using the more accessible C++ API. The tutorial format will be a 50/50 split between lectures and exercises. Students will use their own laptops (Windows, Linux or OS/X) and log into a remote server running an OpenCL platform. Alternatively, students can load OpenCL onto their own laptops prior to the course .The last segment of the tutorial will be spent visiting the “OpenCL zoo”; a diverse collection of OpenCL conformant devices. Tutorial attendees will run their own programs on devices in the zoo to explore performance portability of OpenCL. The zoo should include a mix of CPU, GPU, FPGA, mobile, and DSP devices.

OpenCL: Version 2.0 and Beyond
DATE: Tuesday Nov 18
TIME: 5:30PM - 7:00PM
Birds of a Feather discussion of the latest developments in OpenCL including the recent OpenCL 2.0 specification. A panel representing divergent views on the future of OpenCL will engage in an interactive debate on where to take OpenCL. The BOF will close with a survey of the audience to create “hard data” to can present to the OpenCL standards committee to help them address the unique needs of the HPC community.

Siemens PLM accelerated by AMD FirePro on U-Touch collaborative table top touch screens

Posted by Tony DeYoung on November 03, 2014

Very cool demo explaining Siemens PLM Software collaboration using U-Touch large format tabletop touch screens accelerated by AMD FirePro and Dell workstations. Using these technologies, more stakeholders can be involved and interact with the PLM information to be able to move the design forward - greater productivity with enhanced user experience. Rendering the digital mockups of massive assemblies combined with massive displays and real-time manipulation gives confidence in the design solution before putting it to the shop floor to manufacture a prototype.
