A few day ago I wrote on the really important but not well known DirectGMA technology for FirePro GPUs. Today there is a new AMD FIrePro DirectGMA Data Sheet!

Quick synopsis:

Until recently, there was no method of transferring video directly between the GPU and the SDI I/O card, and a two-step copy approach had to be applied instead, which created unwanted system latency.

DirectGMA, a technology on AMD FirePro GPUs, can reduce that latency in live/on-air broadcast graphics workflows and provides the necessary system bandwidth for demanding 4K and 5K digital cinema applications.

One of the hottest demos you will see at IBC 2014: RealVNC remote access to AMD RapidFire GPUs

At IBC 2014, RealVNC will demonstrate a hybrid VNC proof of concept using AMD RapidFire technology to enable you to remotely access and control a high performance GPU and professional applicaitons wherever you are in the world, whenever you need to. Edit hi-res photos, edit and manipulate 4k videos or render massive 3D and CAD files from your laptop and eventually even your tablet or smartphone.

By simply installing the VNC software application on the remote computer running the RapidFire Pro GPU (e.g. a W8100) and a VNC software application on a local device that is internet-connected to the host, you can manipulate the host computer as if you were sitting in front of it.

This means that you can receive the full graphics and compute performance provided by the AMD RapidFire GPU remotely regardless of the specs of the local computer. Your GPU when you need it.

Since VNC technology is platform agnostic, this potent technology combination could be used to provide the same level of functionality on any operating system, platform or device. Imagine accessing the core power of the RapidFire Pro GPU computer from an iPad or iPhone while commuting on the train or working from home.

What is DirectGMA and why when and how would you use it?

The AMD Developer team posted a blog explaining DirectGMA capabilities available on FirePro graphics cards. I've previously described how AJA Kona SDI cards use DirectGMA for super low latency transfers to and from the GPU for live video processing (AJA will be showing at IBC 2014).

From the blog: DirectGMA exposes a part of the GPU memory and makes it accessible to other devices on the bus. By knowing the address of the exposed memory, any device that supports DirectGMA can write directly into GPU memory and vice versa the GPU can write into the memory of a peer device instead of transferring the data to system memory first. This mechanism can be used to exchange data between AMD FireProTM GPUs and third devices or to do peer-to-peer transfers between multiple AMD FirePro GPUs in one system. With today’s PCIE 3.0 technology, DirectGMA is a very efficient way of transferring data at very low latency.

Example Use Cases:

  • Live 4k video processing enabling SDI video I/O PCIe devices to stream video directly into and from GPU memory.
  • Peer-to-peer data exchange between GPUs to combine their processing power for complex compute tasks or the support of network adapters to allow low latency data exchange in a compute cluster.

AMD FirePro 4k Editing workstation at Canadian Film Centre TIFF BBQ 2014

AMD FirePro was invited to present at the Canadian Film Centre Annual Fundraiser BBQ in conjuction with the Toronto International Film Festival. AMD brought a water-cooled AMD FirePro Ultra Workstation with 4 FirePro W9100s running real-time 4k, multi-node color correction using BlackMagic DaVinici Resolve. The video gives an overview of the system from a unique perspective of a hard core game ASIC layout design engineer, Ed Callway.

A new blog post on the Citrix site talks about AMD FirePro solutions for XenDesktop virtualized workstations.
